i wandered across familiar terrain, carefully ensuring that all my precious exhibits were still intact walking down endless hallways large rooms gardens small rooms
and all of a sudden abruptly unexpectedly there was a place that was oddly familiar dark, forbidding. a tentative step forward a whisper of doubt darted by sharp as a knife and I half-turned in its wake. but this was my museum and I refused to back off
odd sounds old as time and familiar as rhyme I gasp in horror and fascination at images i thought to forget but never could the sounds the sights overlapping each other coming closer overlapping closer repeating repetitive my screams echo i’m brought down to my knees i can’t breathe can’t think don’t want to see, to hear oh my head! my mind! i can’t get up crawl to the door on my hands and knees
but what is this? cold metal bars my way a trap! a snare! what is this? i look around and see for the first time a cage
i must get out i will the images and sounds away from me must think clearly
oh look! a hole in the middle of the cage with a ladder in its centre i peer up, and down endless.
afraid, i take hold of the rungs down one step i peek into the room below even darker its images are i must not go any lower
up! up.. up… i see a platform a way out? hope raises from my heart to my throat and I am surprised to find that i was emitting a clear stream of laughter eyes raw and my cheeks wet with tears like a mad woman, i am
my way out a tightrope a noose as a harness i fasten it on my neck it is my only hope please don’t let me fall i walk, carefully careful balancing stop my tears so i may see the way one foot in front of another where is the end of the tightrope?
despair engulfs me i’ll never make it i stumble i fall! the noose tightens around my neck i can’t breathe! it burns don’t let me drop back into the abyss reaching grasping for the rope legs kicking helplessly in midair i’m choking i’m blacking out have to free myself fingers grappling with rope strength fading i realize with a start; this is an execution for my condemnation.
then without warning the rope falls away i land hard my legs break from the impact i can never run again can never run from the horrors around me
who will save me? i shout to the crowd that has gathered friends, family, loved ones staring back at me with accusing eyes some shaking their heads in disappointment. you! you built this cage i am in! I accuse them one by one
weeping, bleeding, in pain i pull myself to a corner a row of tiny engraving catches my eye too familiar the handwriting with a shock I read
with this night, my grave I dig.
